What you need

The gateway

One CanCan running the Bell Marine firmware, product ID 010010003.

CanCan v1 only. This product has never been built for CanCan v2. If the box in your hand is a v2 (hardware ID 990010061, software 6.x), it cannot run this application — order a v1. See The hardware for how to tell them apart.

On the propulsion side

A Bell Marine propulsion controlleralready installed, commissioned and running on its own CAN bus. The gateway reads that bus; it does not commission a propulsion system
Its CAN busthe bus the controller uses to report itself. Each controller on it has a node number — you will need it, or at least you will need to know how many controllers there are

The propulsion system must be working before the gateway is installed. Everything the boat's screens will show comes from a controller that is already talking.

Wiring

ConnectorGoes toSpeed
CAN 1the boat's MUXEN bus500 kbit/s
CAN 2the Bell Marine controller bus250 kbit/s — fixed by the firmware, not configurable

Both are ordinary 120 Ω CAN buses: two wires and a common ground, one 120 Ω termination at each physical end of each bus and nowhere else. The gateway is terminated only if it happens to be at the end of a segment.

The two buses stay electrically separate, and here that separation is total: the gateway never transmits a single frame on CAN 2. Nothing from the MUXEN bus can reach the propulsion controllers over the wire.

Put nothing else on CAN 2. The gateway listens to that bus without any filter and identifies controllers purely by the shape of their frame identifiers. Another CANopen device sharing the bus can be mistaken for a propulsion controller and appear on the boat's screens as a phantom motor.

The two relays are part of the installation

On this firmware the box's two relay outputs are not general-purpose outputs and cannot be commanded from the MUXEN bus. The propulsion logic drives them:

RelayClosed when
Relay 1the boat has asked for regeneration, for the next 5 seconds
Relay 2the battery bank behind the motor is missing, off, overloaded or low — and at power-up, before any bank has been seen

Both must be wired into the propulsion installation according to the boat's electrical drawing. Relay 2 is closed on a box that has just started, so whatever it drives must tolerate that as the resting state.

The box's own inputs

Two dry-contact inputs and two analog inputs are available as on every CanCan, and are independent of the propulsion function — a bilge float, a tank sender, a temperature probe. They are published together with the relay states, which is also how you can watch what the propulsion logic is doing with the relays. See The hardware.

Power and mounting

As for every CanCan — see the product data brief for 010010003. This manual describes behaviour, not ratings.
