What you need

The gateway

One CAN-EnOcean box running the SFSP receptor firmware, product ID 010010033. The EnOcean radio receiver is inside it: there is no separate receiver block to install and nothing to wire on the radio side.

The box itself — supply, enclosure, LED — is described in The hardware.

On the EnOcean side

Battery-free EnOcean switchesthe wall switches themselves. They harvest the energy of the press and broadcast a short radio telegram; they need no wire, no battery and no maintenance
Nothing elseno receiver block, no repeater, no controller. The gateway is the receiver

The gateway reads the switch telegram broadcast by an EnOcean transmitter: a 32-bit transmitter identifier and a button code. It understands four buttons per transmitter, pressed singly or two at a time, from any transmitter that sends that telegram.

WARNING

Only switch telegrams are decoded. An EnOcean temperature probe, a window contact or any other sensor on the same radio is received and discarded — it will never appear on the MUXEN bus.

TIP

Before ordering a switch model that has not been used on a MUXEN boat before, have one checked on the bench. The firmware decodes one telegram shape and one fixed set of button codes; a transmitter outside that set is silently ignored, and the symptom on board is a switch that does nothing at all.

Radio range and siting

Radio is the part of this installation you cannot see, so site the gateway before you fix it:

  • Put it roughly in the middle of the switches it serves, not at one end of the boat.
  • Keep it out of metal boxes and away from large metal surfaces — a switchboard door, an engine-room bulkhead, a tank. The radio does not get out of a closed steel or aluminium enclosure.
  • Bulkheads, joinery and headliners are not a problem. Metal, water and distance are.
  • A switch glued behind a metal plate or on the far side of a tank is the usual cause of an intermittent switch.

You do not have to guess. Every paired switch publishes a signal strength reading for the last telegram the gateway received from it, so the way to validate a position is to pair one switch, walk the boat pressing it, and watch the number. See Commissioning.

The MUXEN side

ConnectorGoes toSpeed
CANthe boat's MUXEN bus500 kbit/s

An ordinary 120 Ω CAN bus: two wires and a common ground, one 120 Ω termination at each physical end of the bus and nowhere else. The gateway is terminated only if it happens to be at the end of a segment.

There is one bus. Nothing on the MUXEN side is specific to this firmware — see The hardware.
